Don't
go to this movie with expectations. It's not possible to imagine Moulin
Rouge; the movie defies expectation and explanation. A glittering,
whirlwind tour through Paris in its glory, Moulin Rouge is a Bohemian
spectacle and celebration. But at the core of the movie is heart:
a love story that may be corny, but it's definitely beautiful. Kidman
is transluscent and frail as the sickly but beautiful courtesan, and
McGregor is nearly unrecognizable as her idealistic and passionate
lover. Both will suprise you with the range of their voices. The supporting
cast is superb. Music is perhaps more the star than the cast is, and
Moulin Rouge is both a celebration and a deconstruction of pop-culture.
The film is cerebral, funny, moving, and tragic in turns. The pace
is mind-reeling. As a date movie it is simply ideal. You will come
away feeling dreamy eyed and dazed, ready to believe in love against
all odds.
