America's
Sweethearts is a cute movie. It isn't formulaic and men will respond
to the brand of humor, which bears a distinct Billy Crystal stamp.
The film was good, but the ending was weak. It was cute, but somewhat
awkward. We can predict where the love interests are headed, but some
of the sub-plot remains vague until the end. Unfortunately, the final
delivery falls a little flat. The debunking of Hollywood played nicely,
and the romance doesn't overpower the film as a whole. Roberts is
charming and earthy, Cusak vulnerable and very likeable. Catherine
Zita Jones does not particularly shine, but then, she isn't supposed
to. One gripe: stereotyping Latin Americans is bad enough without
casting someone who overdoes the accent to make the mockery even worse.
For offenses against the Latin Community and a limp ending America's
Sweethearts loses a little heart, but it's actually a pretty cute
movie.
